Here's the problem, it's not one thing or the other. I realize that simple minds need to make things simple, but it's not simple.

You have to start with the problem that guns exist. That fact alone complicates everything. We can say, "let's take away the guns," but until you take them away from everyone, everywhere (not possible) you have a massive problem.

You are just pissing in the wind.
