Contrast the US with Canada, which has state funded news media, and while the reporting tends to be more "factual", at least based on what I've seen living in MI, there's also a bias towards the controlling party.
I don't know what the right answer is, but when people can't agree on facts, including what the comprehensive set of facts happens to be, then that makes it nearly impossible to have a conversation. But when your aim is to drive hits or viewership and outrage correlates with viewership, then that creates a perverse incentive.
