Galileo's championing of Copernican heliocentrism was met with opposition from within the Catholic Church and from some astronomers. The opposition to Galileo was at least as vehement as that being hurled at Pope Francis today...but well reasoned changes in teaching are still possible. Knowledge will ultimately win out over ignorance.
