The strongest evidence is consistent with the claim that the NFA caused reductions in mass shootings, because no mass shootings occurred in Australia for 23 years after it was adopted (until the 2019 Darwin shooting). There is also consistent evidence that rates of firearm suicides decreased after the NFA and that suicide reductions were greater in regions where more guns were turned in.
