Putin is personally responsible for more deaths of Russian speaking people than anyone since Stalin.

Ukraine was only a threat to his regime, not to Russia.

He cannot afford to have a free market democracy of Russian speakers on his border because then his own people would clamor for the good life as well.

But he's fighting history itself.
