In general I like the idea that it has to do with the personality traits of conscientious and openness.

But the problem we actually have isn't about the differences between those who are high in openness and low in conscientious and the inverse, having both types in a society is a strength. The problem is that these traits map onto an insane binary political system with the two major parties both moving to the extremes.

Normal people, regardless of their emotional regulation vs logical cognition, have nowhere to go. And worse, people who are otherwise smart and logical, choose the party and tie themselves in knots to rationalize their vote.

And I sit back and marvel at anyone who isn't embarrassed by the choices.
