Obama said that "that could have been my son", and went on to tell the story about how he was unfairly stopped as a "young black man". He stoked the flames in Florida, and violent protests followed - at least exacerbated by his justifying statements.
In Ferguson, he and Eric Holder made it clear from the start that the local police force was on warning. They were affraid to do anymore than back away while looters destroyed the city fo fear of being brought up on civil rights charges.
In both cases, he ignored that the perpetrator had been breaking the law.
This is key.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that rioters who know the police are shackled are more likely to act inapproriately.
