You have a case of selective memory loss...the lockdowns and school closures took place in the midst

of the Novel COVID-19 emergence...with no vaccines available. For an airborne pathogen that was not only deadly, but transmissible by asymptomatic persons...including children...it was essential that people not congregate in large numbers until the vaccines were available...i.e. late 2020, at which time...on a case by case basis for localities, reopening of facilities was allowable.
