Uefa has threatened Gianni Infantino with legal action over his World Cup sell-off plan and warned him not to destroy any material relating to it.

Telegraph Sport can reveal that European football’s governing body has also written to Joshua Kushner, Greg Maffei, JP Morgan and OpenEconomics stating it is “actively considering legal action, arbitration, and/or regulatory complaints” arising from the doomed venture.

Fifa president Infantino scrapped plans to sell stakes in its flagship tournament and other events to private investors on Saturday following an unprecedented revolt against a proposal involving those with links to Donald Trump.

The ‘expected’ lead of the proposed investor group was Thrive Eternal, a fund launched by Joshua Kusher, the brother of Jared Kushner.

The rebellion was spearheaded by Uefa, which announced on Thursday that its 55 members would boycott the World Cup if Infantino went ahead with the move and has since made clear it will fight to oust him from office.

In a letter sent to Infantino on Friday, which has been seen by Telegraph Sport, Uefa wrote: “Uefa hereby gives formal notice that it is actively considering legal action, arbitration, and/or regulatory complaints (together, the “proceedings”) arising out of and in connection with the FFE plan proposed by Fifa and all related matters as further described below.

In an announcement of its plan on Tuesday, Fifa named those who would be involved.

They included Kushner, whose older brother Jared is US president Trump’s son-in-law. The billionaire’s Thrive Eternal fund was identified as the “expected” lead of the proposed investor group for FFE.

Also announced as being involved was Trump donor Maffei, the chief executive of Bann Ventures, who was president and chief executive of Liberty Media during its acquisition and ownership of Formula One.

JP Morgan and OpenEconomics were also described as being involved in the hunt for prospective investors.
