But I think we might be able to agree that it would not make too much sense to accept a figure far lower than the official Chinese government number, which obviously errs on the low side.

The section from Wikipedia summarizes the debate pretty well.

No matter what the figure - hundreds or thousands - your position might be the most idiotic thing you have posted on this board. Which is really saying something.
