Could it be that they are just buddies going back to The Apprentice?

I don't get this at all.

It would be essentially a harmless pardon/commutation, but still. The worst - so far - is Clinton's pardon of Mark Rich. Ford pardoning Nixon made people crazy at the time, but at least you can see the logic.
