I'm sorry but politicians spout what polls show them their voters want to hear.

We are an extremely divided species right now... and are also very intolerant of opposing opinions. If the Dems sweep and focus all their energy on persecuting Republicans... this might provide license for the most virulent members of their base.

So in the worst of all possible worlds we might be in the early stages of a Dem party led La Terreur... but of course this might trigger another Thermidorian Reaction.
