I've defended the protesters more than anyone and have never defended violence of any kind

Criticizing Trump's response to the violent protests (which has only made them bigger and more violent) is not the same as defending those committing the violent acts.

Speaking of violence, Trump missed an opportunity to praise the non-violent approach of John Lewis. If more young people understood what he accomplished through non-violent tactics, the current protesters would likely act differently.
