That & many 18 year olds don't look that far into their future

As in what will they do when their football career is over?

Keep in mind these kids have been under the impression (many since grade school) that they WILL be playing in the NFL, where they will make millions of dollars that will last for the rest of their life. They don't take in account that only 1% of college football players actually make it to the NFL and even fewer last more than a season or two.

If they did realize this then they would know how important a degree from school like Notre Dame is and how they could still have a very successful career/ life even if their NFL playing days are short or are non-existent.
