Decline of the Midwest and most of New England

Even if you look at things on a per capita basis, you would expect Michigan, Illinois, etc., to have at least a somewhat better representation...

I'm actually quite surprised that Illinois isn't getting a lot more into that 1st round, especially with all of the Chicago area high school powerhouses. Maybe they simply put out more Rd 2 - Rd 7 picks instead.
