There is no perfect system

For the vast majority of the history of college football, the predominant system was polls - the very worst way to select a champion.

Then came the BCS, which sought to pit the top two teams against each other. The fatal flaws of the BCS were the selection criteria that was still too heavily dependent on the polls and the 'playoff' was limited to two teams.

So they scrapped the BCS and went with the CFP model, expanding to four. In my opinion, this was the best system to date. Expanded opportunity but still exclusive, and the polls replaced by a selection committee.

And now we are moving to 12. So awful in every way. Kill the one thing that is unique about college football - your season is on the line every week. Those Nov rivalry games will still matter, but they will be far less compelling.

Nowhere in any of this is any discussion of the extra burden on the players due to the extra games. Nobody cares about that.

EDIT: typo

  • This whole playoff thing is a joke the way it’s constructed. Can u imagine if PSU lost to Kent or - ndphysics - 9:53am 11/1/24 (6) [View All]
    • This is as good as it will get in ensuring the best teams get a shot. - jakers - 10:00am 11/2/24
    • I never wanted a playoff. It cheapens the regular season and New Years Day is decimated. [NT] - Shadow_of_the_Dome - 2:49am 11/2/24

      • I think 8 is enough. You still have every week a big week that way and 8 teams are fair. I am glad - THEISMANCARR - 6:16pm 11/1/24
      • I like the 12 team playoff, but good points. [NT] - iairishcheeks - 11:17am 11/1/24
      • Exactly. Nobody cares about that - ndphysics - 10:26am 11/1/24
