You're not entitling Williams to the normal human emotions which the article suggests he may be experiencing.

If I or you were a starter on a team and got relegated downward, would either of us be completely sanguine about the circumstance?

That Williams is a great teammate and may also be disappointed about the evolution of his status is not disjoint.
