Notre Dame's undergrad structure focuses on first-time bachelor's degrees. One can earn a double major, or dual- degree. That requires simultaneously earning both degrees. Returning to earn a second bachelor's degree is generally not permitted.

As far as I know, ND does have an engineering and Arts and Letters degree that allows a 5 year curriculum. There may be others that I am not aware of. Regardless, he was not in a program like that. He graduated and therefore was not going to go any further at ND unless he applied for a grad program.
