A cult movie is one that most people think is basically garbage...but to a small group of people, it is fantastic.
Rocky Horror is the most obvious one, but there are many others.
I think I'm in the "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" cult. Most think it is crap; I love it. Just watched it again on IFC. It's just great.
Some possible others for me (not sure if they qualify, really):
Mulholland Drive
Where's Poppa?
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Big Lebowski
28 Days Later (too popular?)

Critics seem to love it.
I watched it without cracking a smile, however.

My family has a ritual of watching Elf on the Fourth of July. It started when the fireworks were postponed one 4th, and has been watched every year since. We even started doing the Narwhal goodbye in unison... "Bye Buddy, hope you find your Dad."
But yes, Life Aquatic, Tennenbaums, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore.... and others are all good. However, not sure they are cult movies.
...primarily because it features perhaps the hottest lesbian make-out scene in the history of R-rated movies.
You are correct about Life Aquatic. It is great....for insomniacs.
I've seen the movie at least 10 times. Funny every time!

I have been told that you have to watch this movie twice which admittedly I haven't.

I got one. It's called Abominable. It's basically a remake of Rear Window, but with a Yeti. The guy who played Lloyd Braun in Seinfeld stars. It's awful. And awesome.
Link: Abominable
Like I said, it's Rear Window with a Yeti. What a great idea.
