the course of our conversation, we got talking about golf, and he immediately brought up his caddying for Babe Ruth...you remember that thread, don't you?...well, I asked him a bit more about those experiences and whether it was during the period when I had assumed The Babe was there for Spring Training...turns out that my assumption was in error, and Joe's recollection of his age at the time was off by a few years...he was older, and the time frame was February of 1940 and 1941 when The Babe operated a 'Baseball School' for kids in Palatka, Florida, which was Joe's hometown (see link)...so now you have the "rest of the story"...the details of which happily several other readers didn't need.

Back to the essentials of your post...let's not forget "Why" those WWII veterans served...against authoritarianism, and for Democracy. We can never forget that lesson, since the threat still exists.

So, how old was he in 1940-41 when he caddied for the Babe?

...with an inaccurate “kids memory”. Yet he was 17 and about to enter the war and fly in bombing missions.

This is in addition to Tyrone having to change the age of his buddy after GOAT caught him. It also goes along with a predilection of the poster to claim friendship and highly respected sources from what appear to be imaginary people on more than one occasion. And, the poster is doubling down with modifications to the original after being called out.

.......one might hone in on other aspects with more specific info, but usually when two embellishments are found in a silly-sounding story, further effort isn’t necessary.

past very well...a refrain he repeats often to his dismay in our conversations...you, however, are much younger and should know that those 17 year old mental faculties of his were a long, long time ago...yet you ascribe them to him today!! What is happening to your own mind?...Unbelievable.

Let's get real here...this has very little to do with Joe, and everything to do with me...you're absolutely desperate to "cancel" me for letting all forum readers know the truth about your mis-leading past posts on issues of importance to everyone's health. I know it hurts, but you made mistakes...suck it up and make your own internal promise to never do it again.

Heartbreaking, but, at the same time, so proud of these young men. I always wondered who the two American soldiers were that were killed as soon as they set foot on the beach. One went down instantly and the other went down, struggled to get back up, and went down for a second final time. They both had names, parents ,maybe wives or girlfriends back home. I wonder who they were and where they were from.
