California county bills a man $23k to build an 1,800 sq ft house for a "traffic study" and to repair

roads. Man sues and the US Supreme Court agreed to hear the case. The County made zero effort to tie the fee to the size of his house. Instead it's just an arbitrary number that the County will use to raise revenue and repair roads. If you are not building a house, then you don't pay the fee. In reality, it's an unconstitutional taking of his property (and others) because it has the effect of preventing development. The guy was a laborer all his life and now can't build on his land.

I'm surprised the County didn't just settle the case and is incurring legal fees all the way to the Supreme Court to fight this. But if the County can charge an arbitrary fee of $23k, then why not $230,000 or $1,000,000? If the Supreme Court upholds this, then there will be no rational limit on what a County can charge citizens and for what.

that $23K permit in El Dorado county, since his home in the hills mirrors that one to a fair degree...short story is that he's not surprised at all given all the required planning and testing that needs to be done in such environments in a state with earthquakes and forest fires on top of just building in mountainous terrain. Many specialists necessarily get involved...and if a plot involves public land, which El Dorado country definitely includes (~40%), then additional fees are encountered...there are often easements to be resolved, percolation testing, electrical and sewage access...the list goes on to eventually addressing the road issues. He also mentioned that his son, living in Santa Barbara has it even worse from a permitting cost perspective...but they love their home(s)...wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

btw, my friend is a conservative Republican...but has the good sense to not even dream of having DJT in the WH again.

LOL. It's traffic impact mitigation fee, $23,000, a very specific fee. Your post is irrelevant.

single family residence builders pay even more than $23K for that permit on an 1,800 sqft home...add in all the other fees my friend mentioned and the total permit could amount to 15% of the building cost...also, this fee has been around for many years and impacts all developments.

Today you are defending indefensible government bloat that helps create the very housing problem that you will pretend to be concerned about tomorrow.

Why the double standard? Because you can't abide an attack on your team. So easy to see through.

I'm just providing evidence that such fees are not out of the ordinary in El Dorado County...the OP

It’s all you ever do.

Great news, though - more Americans may yet die, so you’ll have lots of opportunities to score more imaginary points for Trump.
