Forget the lack of authority issue... what is the logic behind student loan forgiveness?
And where should it stop? Just certain groups and why? Just this year or going forward and why? And shouldn't the colleges be on the hook?

We all know the value of higher education, but the Status Quo from an economic standpoint is
far from optimal...college costs are rising higher than inflation, and the loan industry is doing all it can to maximize profits, thus leaving those with minimal resources and wealth in a quandary...how to get ahead without sinking under un-payable debt.
We also know that the entire country benefits from a better educated and trained workforce, so on a 'Macro' scale it's worth contemplating government assistance...as part of a larger response to an important problem...btw, some nations view it important enough to make higher education (and trade skills) free for those who qualify (i.e. covered by taxes).
The attached article addresses the basic issue of "fairness" as well as some options for lowering the cost for those most in need.

When I got out of college with a B.A. in Computer Science, the best job I was offered was $6/hour to do Cobol programming and bill collecting for a division of Chase Manhattan. After two years of applying for better jobs and being denied promotions I said screw it and tried to be a pro golfer. My total income my whole life at age 62 is roughly $500,000.

You're painting with a very broad brush...while there are kids in college for fun and games, like
some from very wealthy families whose parents paid even more than average to get them into prestigious schools, I seriously doubt that the students trying to pull themselves up the economic ladder are in that cohort...data shows that over 70% of those in need of loan forgiveness are from low income backgrounds genuinely seeking better paying careers.

Regarding higher education, I do have suggestion which is a compromise solution between the left and the right and makes the issue politically neutral, therefore the special-interest groups become irrelevant. Will present my suggestion next time when we touch thus topic.

I’m 100% against student loan forgiveness…
Conor brought up a good idea a while back that I feel is fair and just: those that want their student loans forgiven should sign up for military service. During which time they could take advantage of the GI Bill and those funds would be used to pay back their student loans. Win win.

I am with you on this. It punishes parents who saved for their kids’ education.
But, I am OK with forgiveness of loans in exchange for any public or non profit service.
It need not be military service.
No free lunches. I am a huge proponent of government aid for higher education, but one must pay it back in some meaningful and equitable way.
I also favor a draft — 5 % of high school or college graduates being required to serve in military or public service, e.g., Habitat for Humanity or Peace Corps. Those 5% will learn they are the luckiest of Americans to be part of a selfless objective, part of a lifelong sisterhood and brotherhood. I would also throw in a $100k tax credit, that they can use over 10 years following their discharge from service.

That's an excellent idea...H.S. grads get a year or two of living and serving in the real world
before heading off to college or trade school...I recall many top business schools requiring at least a couple of years or work before applying for an MBA...students are more focused and bring more to the classroom from their experiences.

By now you should have realized that the solution to the border issue has already been agreed upon
in the Senate...Trump is blocking it...as for spending and regulation concerns, that's as vague as one can get...be specific...that's assuming you've given it careful thought.

And doing an excellent job getting much needed bi-partisan legislation passed...which in 4 yrs, DJT
kept promising, but never delivering...and...his admin delivered a bill to Congress on Day 1 for a solution to our border problems, which finally gained bi-partisan support in the Senate. Internationally, he's strengthened our alliances, restoring respect for the U.S. and holding firm against Russian and China....while also getting us through COVID, which his predecessor termed a hoax and then no worse than the Flu...even when he knew how deadly it was.
With Trump's ineptitude, stupidity and criminality...as testified to by GOP leaders who actually worked with/for him...it's an indictment of all who even consider him for office.
