Does that statement need further review by the experts? Does this statement make anyone more secure in the future? Just a little lapse in security decision making could and will cost lives. All these political appointees hanging around the news conference doesn't exactly exude safety and security to me. I have 100% more faith in law enforcement on the ground than these politicians. Who knew about this murderous coward terrorist and when did they know about him?

My first-hand account of the Bourbon Street/Canal Street intersection

I walked in the exact same spot at around 12:15 a.m. at the intersection where the terrorist entered Bourbon Street. At that time there were just a couple of metal temporary fences with about five police officers there. Later, they parked a police cruiser there.

I figured the area was secure from cars but obviously not. They do allow cars to drive on Bourbon Street but probably not anymore.

Because apparently there still would have been enough room on the sidewalk to get around them. Easy fix is to put one on each sidewalk.

We've spent blood and treasure around the world in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Syria, etc. over the last 20+ years and there are no doubt more terrorists who want to kill us now than before.

We can't bubble wrap society. Do TSA agents groping grandma and having everyone take off their shoes make anyone feel safer?

Also, let's keep in mind that people have always died for senseless reasons. This event is no more tragic than fentanyl overdoses or random violence in Chicago every weekend.

Agree. Large pedestrian gatherings are inherently vulnerable.

drawn up by professionals, not politicians. Other than NYC that department prolly has more experience dealing with large events and crowds than any other. Soft targets like a crowded street are very difficult to defend. Defense has to succeed 100% of the time which doesn’t happen. The ones they stop you never hear about.

Questions need to be raised. Hydralic barriers were apparently taken out for replacement but there was little to replace them until the Super Bowl. Driver apparently found a weak point and took advantage of it. A lesson learned for next time at the expense of 15 lives is not acceptable. Miss Chief needs to be asked why nothing more substantial was installed as a temporay replacement or did it just slip her mind? No crime in raising questions. Make no mistake about it that the terrorist is 100% responsible for the lost 15 lives and the carnage he created.

olitical and financial ambitions of those elected, and it's a bi-partisan issue. And safety is all encompassing...terrorism, to subway safety, to lead pipes, to the food we eat to the drugs we take. Why so many trust the government to be a nanny, to want ever bigger government is absolute mystery.

Relative to the barricades that didn't work....let's send more money to Ukraine. These are the choices to be made. Homeland safety versus funneling money through Ukraine to buy inflated art done by the President's son.
