What also isn't supported in the data, policing is much different now than it was 20 years ago. Now, an officer is much more willing to "mix it up" with a detainee or perp because a lot of them are in the profession for the wrong reason.

It's not that their existence is secret. Everyone knew about the Shah's police.
It's that their operations are secret. No oversight. No rules. No accountability.
You know. Like ICE.
Every law enforcement agency, from the FBI, to ATF to the US Marshalls to ICE to your local police force perform operations in secret, otherwise they would never be able to arrest criminals, fugitives or illegal immigrants.
Jobs, there wouldn’t be a need for masks. Also, if millions of illegals weren’t escorted into the court, we would need as many ICE agents.
But sure, hurting democracy is more dramatic so go with that.

Other US law enforcement agencies seem to handle it just fine.
If people go after them, then they should be prosecuted.
