a coherent messaging from the liberal protestors about why they don't want them.

Have they focused in on one or maybe few consistently expressed reasons for their opposition, or are they just going with "we want China to win the AI race and take down the United States"?

There are some issues with good solutions, but I haven't heard any of these protestors having a real discussion about them. Instead, it seems to be just reflex left wing opposition when the orders went out: "Drop the "No Kings" and 'Free Palestine" signs, and pick up the 'No Data Center' signs".

The DSA has a few good ideas, IMO. And one of them is to manage data centers as a public utility.

Here is what is happening locally:
Tax Break Structure
Property Tax Exemption: Facilities receive a 20-year exemption on 70% of the project's new property valuation, paying regular taxes on the remaining 30%.

Rebates and Fees: Projects like QTS also secured up to a 75% rebate on electrical franchise fees collected via Alliant Energy over 20 years.

State Programs: Incentives are backed by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) High Quality Jobs Program, which ties tax credits to local job creation and capital investments.

There is short term job creation that will mostly dry up once the data centers are online. Long term, locals will pay more for electricity and water.

The primary fear from the youngsters is that AI will take their jobs, it's valid but is inevitable.

Localizing the data centers (so as to eliminate the need for infrastructure (power lines, etc), and building a separate nuclear power facilities where they also pay separately for their power so as not to affect private electricity costs. The nuclear facilities would be run by the same companies that run the private sector nuclear facilities, following the same rules & regulations - and they would most definitely NOT be owned nor operated by the tech companies. The energy companies would also profit from this of two separate systems.

So when you put one near a municipality serving 100K people it is a significant impact.

Municipalities could charge data centers more for water that would make closed loop costs advantageous, but as is there are way more evaporative systems than closed loop.

There are solutions....but nobody is interested in talking nor about the newer options available technologically. It seems to be more Chinese driven anti American propaganda via the liberal activists.
