AI Summary since I can't read the article and to ruffle your feathers:
**White House Whipsaws Silicon Valley (and Itself) Over A.I. Rules**
*The New York Times*, August 4, 2026, by David McCabe, Mike Isaac, Ana Swanson, and Kate Conger.
### Summary
The Trump administration has been internally divided and inconsistent in recent weeks over how to handle rapidly advancing artificial intelligence—particularly “open-source” AI models that anyone can freely download and modify. These models are popular with Chinese companies and have intensified U.S.-China tech competition.
A group of senior officials, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, debated a more aggressive, interventionist stance. Options considered included sanctions, placing Chinese open-source AI makers on a trade blacklist, or prohibiting U.S. cloud providers from doing business with them.
After strong pushback from Silicon Valley, officials largely reversed course. They are now prioritizing efforts to make American AI models more competitive instead of cracking down hard on open-source ones.
On the day the article was published, the White House planned to meet with U.S. tech companies to discuss a framework under which the government could review new AI models for cybersecurity risks before public release.
The article frames this policy “whiplash” as evidence of the administration’s conflicting impulses: it has intervened aggressively in other parts of the economy, yet AI’s speed and complexity make coherent regulation difficult. Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) captured the sense of rapid change after meeting Nvidia and OpenAI executives: “This is all happening so fast… I don’t know that I have any definite conclusions about any of it.”
In short, the White House has oscillated between heavier intervention on open-source AI (especially Chinese models) and a lighter-touch approach favoring U.S. industry competitiveness, leaving both policymakers and Silicon Valley uncertain about the rules of the road.
I am all for capitalism, free competitive markets, and entrepreneurship.
But, not the wild wild west. Effective and responsible regulation in all matters. Not bureaucracy, but meaningful checks and safety nets.
Re AI, Trump's crew is largely deferential to Musk et al, and Silicon Valley. I would hope that the United States Government would lead from the front in safeguarding AI's power.
About it.
Supporting AI actually was Trump admin’s strong achievement. Do you know how much money Trump brought in from GCC states last summed when he visited these countries? It’s not billions. It’s trillions $. Only his fucking stupid Iran war probably will ruin these deals.
But we both know that you would criticize anything the Trump admin did regarding AI. If they took a heavy hand you would want "capitalism, free competitive markets, and entrepreneurship." If they took a free market approach you would want a heavy handed approach. What's happening is that they are trying to figure out what the best path is. It is a situation that is unprecedented in its scope and speed. Previous transformative technologies tools years and/or decades to develop, AI will be vastly more powerful and capable next week
Bidens approach was to limit AI development to only a few top tech firms. The emergence of the Open source models is a great thing, IMO. It keeps the big players honest and protects the consumer.
If you want to share the specifics of how you would regulate AI we can monitor your wisdom on this matter vs the administration.
AI Giants with a massive, high-performance frontier-class model kimi k3.
Take ChatGPT latest version 5.5 as an example to compare. Except the speed Kimi K3 is at same level as ChatGPT 5.5 or even better on basically all the benchmarks. The overall (aggregate) intelligence of Kimi K3 is better than ChatGPT because its reasoning and math abilities which has always been strength of Chinese AI models (another one is deepseek) and its excellence at processing extremely large documents. ChatGPT is faster than Kimi K3 a little bit. But in most cases and for most users, they prefer features over speed in their applications.
The most important factor is the cost. API pricing of kimi k3 is much much cheaper than ChatGPT 5.5.
Your data is retained and will likely be used to train future models.
You provide data to AI. This makes you a content creator. Companies behind AI models should pay you, just like YouTube pays video creators. The more you use AI the more you got paid.
...or it will go back in time and hunt her down.
One example why it's wise to be careful.
