You can have a generous welfare State or you can have an open border, but you can’t have both.
So, now with their government run grocery stores they’ll make the Trumpian decision to designate borders (geographical areas/New York only neighborhoods) to make clear which constituents are eligible for their government service/handout. They will also use ID’s to verify citizenship (residence) within those approved areas.
To ensure border service access to only approved constituents, they will presumably utilize cashiers as newly deputized NYCE (New York Customs—Cashier—Enforcement) agents to review and confirm all required ID documents.
How soon before the fake ID’s become an issue? Will child exploitation commence when underage residents from the same household, or organized groups, are deployed to complete shopping duties to pick up popular items which may create scarce supplies?
I am sure they will devise a scheme to ensure benefits are reserved only for residents within the designated area. Nevertheless, it is interesting how they label Trump a fascist for securing the nation as they seek to secure benefits for those in their own fiefdoms.
Will the cashiers and other store workers be restricted to local residents within the designated area, or will they be pulled from outside illegals who presumably must return to grocery stores within their own homeland to eat?

Other municipalities have made publicly owned grocery stores work...it's definitely worth the try...
...instead of turning one's back to those with fundamental needs...btw, haven't heard a single word from you regarding an alternative solution...how's about expending a little effort in that direction...

grocery stores work with military ID? I grew up from government-run grocery stores.
I know how they “worked”. An ID is a must for government-run grocery stores. Because they are subsidized, amount of their supply is limited. You can only serve for certain groups of customers.

How can you sell tax payer subsidized groceries without driving private stores out of business?
Then, when a city in debt closes its stores because it can no longer support them, you have true urban "food deserts," and the communist cycle is complete. Ever see the empty shelves in the soviet grocery stores, and the long lines of people who have nowhere else to go?

Inflation is a real problem, to be sure, but communisim is worse. First, do no harm.
Status quo is better than your proposal of communism.
I propose that the government stop printing money. It takes time for wages to catch up to inflationary costs, so let's stop generating inflationary costs. But, unfortunately, we will have to inflate the US dollar to pay down our debt to a manageable level. So, we have more inflation coming in the best scenario. While that is happening, I expect we will have to fend off communists like yourself who never want to let a good crisis go to waste.
But, that is the best case. The worst scenario is inflating the US dollar so we can spend it on bullshit like encouraging transgenderism in Bangladesh, or run a domestic aid program with 50% waste like the covid aid programs. The worst case scenario is far more likely.
