5 is just to small a list with so much vocal talent in Rock. Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney, Dimash Qudaibergen (who is the greatest vocalist this planet has ever known), Celine Dion, Lara Fabian. Jon Anderson, Al Green.

In no particular order:
- Steve Marriott (Robert Plant emulated him. Keef wanted him in the Stones. After some demos, Jagger said no, knowing Marriott's vocals would overshadow his.)
- Terry Reid ("Superlungs." Jimmy Page's first choice as lead vocalist for the New Yardbirds. Reid said no and Plant got the gig.)
- Paul Rodgers (Take your pick from Free and Bad Company. Elton John's pick for the greatest rock vocalist of all time.)
- Steve Winwood (He was already magnificent at 15. Wrote some great stuff, with Can't Find My Way Home at the top, along with terrific vocals on that one.)
- Ronnie James Dio (Best hard rock/metal vocalist of all time. Completely unique sound.)
- Chris Cornell (I agree with you here, and will give him the nod over Staley among "grunge" singers.)
And two Jefferson Airplane/Starship vocalists: Marty Balin and Mickey Thomas. Thomas is the most underrated rock vocalist of all time. Yes, he sang during a weaker period for the band, but I don't think any male rock singer could hit the notes he could, and he did it effortlessly. Watch the video on YouTube of him singing "Jane" on the old show, "Fridays." The frightening thing is that he still can.
Last thing: McCartney had a tremendous voice. No question. But Lennon had the rock and roll voice. Other than Elvis and Buddy Holly, Lennon has the most distinctive voice in rock history.
