Of course West Virginia should tear down Robert Byrd's statue.

But they won't.

West Virginians will revere Robert Byrd until the end of time for two reasons:

1.) Through his long service, Byrd was able to accumulate enough seniority to direct some of the spoils of modern government toward improve the lives of many of the sorry citizens of his backward, woefully underdeveloped state. And,

2.) They know the guy was KKK, and a hoopie through and through, so they love him, even though the KKK is all Republican now.

I don't think Byrd was anywhere near as big a bucket of shit as Robert E. Lee was, though. That guy was a motherfuckin' traitor.

Grown men weep at the mention of his name.

I really didn't know there was a statue of Byrd in the state, but, given West Virginia and West Virginians, i guess it's not surprising. I don't usually stay current with statue building around the country. I just missed it.

I think Trump should demand that the GOP governor tear the damn thing down, but Trump is too big a pansy, and the governor is, too.

GOP pansies.

"A funeral was held on July 2, 2010, on the grounds of the State Capitol where Byrd was eulogized by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Governor Joe Manchin, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Senator Jay Rockefeller, Congressman Nick Rahall, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and former President Bill Clinton. After the funeral services in Charleston, his body was returned to Arlington, Virginia, for funeral services on July 6, 2010, at Memorial Baptist Church. After the funeral in Arlington, Byrd was buried next to his wife Erma at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, although family members have stated that both the senator and Mrs. Byrd will be reinterred somewhere in West Virginia once a site is determined."

Hey, but he's sorry for being a member of the KKK.

Once you go down this road, removing monuments that offend people, few will be off-limits. The folks who have driven this effort are adherents to a religion that weaves a tale of the original sin of light-skinned folks and it can more than ensnare any Euro-American of note over the past 300 years. The folks behind this are devoid of the ability to create nuanced thoughts or place things in historical perspective, with their oversimplification of Lee a prime example. These are also folks accustomed to getting their way. Once you indulge them, they will demand more. Only a fool would believe that they will stop with Confederate symbols.

The ultimate destination here will be statues of themselves, which is, to a large extent, what this is all about.

I'm sure you can find radicals who want statues of the founding fathers to come down on your culture-war sites, but there is very little support for it in broader society.

This is a confederacy issue, no matter how badly you want to make a slippery-slope argument.

Uh, Chris, what do the polls say about removing these statues? Doh!

Enlightened white people of means like you love this sort of thing. It requires virtually nothing of you but by getting behind it, it projects what you want to project to the world. In a million years, you won't move to an all-black neighborhood or send your child to an all-black school or move an impoverished minority family under your roof or even attend an all-black church, but you'll get behind something like this, puff out your puny chest and proudly denounce anyone who doesn't see it your way as lowdown, dirty racists.

Cross mascots and statues off the list. Offensive books just have to be next.

the premise that statues will only be removed if most of the people support removing them. That is factually incorrect, as demonstrated by the current removals.

"Extremism" is another non-word employed by shysters. What it really means is: "Opinion unpopular with the accuser or a particular group." It's smear used to avoid a legitimate debate.

You have no argument for the actual issue - at least not one that does not put you in the KKK camp - so you ask us to imagine some sort of mindless dystopia where all statues are taken down.

Rather than reality, which is that confederate monuments erected during the height of Jim Crow are being removed. And it's about time.

Actually, professor, you struggle with coming to terms with the asinine assertions you make and then rest upon this sort of feeble accusation when you can't retract it.

Yes, I do argue against removing these monuments for the three basic reasons I cited, which, according to what you wrote, amounts to "no argument," which then renders me a part of "the KKK camp."

Now, what's your next bit of nonsense?

The KKK and "alt-rgith"also supports the same position as the ACLU on free speech and free assembly, therefore the ACLU is a KKK and "alt-right" sympathizing organization!

Would you mind if I save this and give it to a wider audience, prefacing it by informing the audience that this is a tenured professor making these asinine arguments that employ any number of logical fallacies? And in political science, to boot!
