Universal Background Checks

Everybody always mentions gun show sales as the real reason for needing universal background checks... i believe the statistic on those sales is that only 0.7% of all guns transactions are through gun shows and not a single one has ever been used in a mass murder.

We should require a license to buy a gun.

In NYS you need one for hand guns. I say make that a universal feature for every gun owner.

Kind of reminds me of when Rocket Ismail played for Notre Dame

What does that actually accomplish?

"New York state law does not require a license to own or possess long guns, but does require a permit to legally possess or own a pistol."

99%+ of "gun show sales" are done with instant, federal background checks.

The only sales that aren't are when two people meet and have a private transaction.

Commonly, a guy with an M-1 on his shoulder with a sign "For Sale" on it, another person says, "How much?" and next thing you know, cash changes hands. Usually the parties exchange divers license numbers, but there is no requirement for that, it is just good to do.

I put "gun show sales" in quotes because I don't even know if you can call those sales "gun show sales" since they are usually not by a gun show vendor. They are private citizen transactions of used firearms, not by commercial vendors. That is the only "loophole" there is now, and it is not a gun show loophole but a private transaction loophole. I can meet someone at church or on craigs list and sell them a used firearm without having to run a background check. That is usually not how mass shooters get their guns, but it may be how most criminals in Chicago get their guns.

Background checks should be required for private sales.

It could be an easy online process and it would protect the seller. When you buy a new gun or any gun from an FFL, your name is tied to that serial number. If you sell it privately and it's subsequently used in a crime, guess who they'll come looking for.

I'm willing to discuss that. But, it has little if anything to do with gun shows.

And, that "solution" does nothing to stop the any of the recent shooters.

Why not discuss something that might actually address the problem?

Universal background checks and magazine restrictions are just common sense.

Also, common sense that you shouldn’t be concealed or open carrying a firearm without demonstrating you know how to properly and safely carry and use it as you need to show to operate a vehicle.

Your comment before about stupid people open carrying was spot on. We had a soccer mom a few years back in the area that use to open carry at little kids games. She was also a vocal, screaming nut. Scared the shit out of everyone including the refs. She ended up removing herself from the gene pool through suicide. Not greatly lamented.

Yep, I can't sell my car to you without a legal title change.

And from a legal perspective, this process protects both of us. I don't see how firearms are much different given the risk and liability that each entail.

And you can't drive without some demonstrated competency. There was a thing awhile back about a blind person wanting a CCW. If they can keep all the rounds on paper without assistance, then okay. Otherwise it's public safety vs individual freedom.

It's common sense.

Maybe I shouldn't be posting this. Gun banners may try for something else if they find this out.

Universal background checks.

and Jane, she is a clerk

I'd support any ID verification/background check/etc for gun purchase that is also applied to voting

armed and with lots of rounds the week after the massacre. Even if it’s only windows dressing, something will have to be done legislation wise. The needle is getting moved with the public on this especially in suburbia.
