I am interested in your bathroom remodel experiences.

What went right or wrong.

We have to completely gut a 6x12 bathroom with a tub. Staring down at $40,000 all-in. Includes heated floor, installation of an exhaust fan, custom cabinets made to fit the space, moving a radiator, tile on the floors and walls.

What's worth it and what isn't?

Thx

Are you able to do any of the work yourself?

Drywall is not hard, and neither is tile really.

I would pay for things that you really don't want to screw up, like moving a drain in a slab like I had to.

You are going for a bit more than I did though with heated floors and such. I did two bathrooms here in Georgia and came in under 10k because other than said drain, I did the rest myself. Also depends on how valuable your time is to you, people never put that into their cost comparison. If I had paid a lot more it would have been done a lot faster than what it took for me to do it, and I would not have had a part time "job" most every night of the week and weekends.

If you are going to pay that much, make sure you are anal as hell with them so that everything is exactly how you want it before they leave.

unless you were asking for a very top line bathroom, I would have expected this to cost about 10k though I dont know where you live since cost of living varies.

I did a full master bath redo a couple of years ago and paid $45K. I had quotes for significantly more than that. I live in the midwest.

The price does bring tears to my eyes.

I have gotten three estimates, this one was in the middle.

I live in the pricey North East.

Mark's $70k job makes me feel better.

That seems like an excessive amount of money to spend.

I finished a whole basement for about $30K. I did the framing, drywall and wiring myself, but still, $40K for a bathroom?

My wife insisted on moving two sinks about 12 inches each, plus moving the shower drain about the same, plus flipping the faucet on the new tub to the other side; it satisfied her OCD issues by centering the sink and shower drain to fit the new custom cabinets and counter tops, but it also added almost $20K to the project.

If you don't need custom cabinets, don't get them -- you can get pre-made cabinets from Lowes or Home Depot, or you can even have your existing cabinets refinished. Our counter tops are granite, which is very durable but expensive.

All together we spent over $70K. We won't get it back if we sell, but it's our house and we really didn't look at it as an investment.

Ripped out cabinets and had custom ones installed, new granite, new sinks, all new fixtures, new light fixtures, completely new walk in shower....

Granted no new piping, no new jetted tub, and kept the floors...and we spent about $8k

I would expect what you are talking about to cost $17-18k max....

A very high end, large kitchen should be in the $30-40k range.....we redid ours but refaced cabinets, new granite, all new appliances, $10-12k

Once again kept the floors and just refinished them, but put in new recessed lighting and a new light fixture

We are in Georgia.....imagine NY/NJ/Connecticut is higher but feel sorry for you if it's that higher

You have to live in NY and NJ to understand why.

The Contractor's WC and GL insurance alone is astronomical and built into the price.

Yes, I can save $ by shopping at Lowes or HD or doing some work myself but on the latter I don't have time. Between the 3 bids and what I know of the area we aren't getting gouged. We're not getting a deal but we aren't getting gouged.

Believe me I wanted to move to NC or NH but life and stuff happens.

We are trying to maximize counter space so we may have to go custom.

Our starts at the end of March. We don't need the heated floors here in Florida but everything else is being torn out and redone. We are all in about $22K. We kicked around the idea of removing the garden tub and relocating the shower but that drove up the cost. I hear nightmares about any remodels and this will be our first. We'll be glad when it's over and completed.

Me too, I can't wait for it to be over.
