Mine is easy....The Legend of Boggy Creek. Scared the bejesus out of me. The night I saw it, I slept on the floor next to my parent's bed.

Intensely sad, not frightening.
The 1980 version is not universally praised. I think it's one of the most emotionally-piercing movies ever made and the performances by John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins are amazing.

Salem's Lot is right up there for me too. As for the ocean...
I still occasionally go in, but it really scares me. As an adult I developed a healthy (and wise) fear of the ocean.
