Can someone more into baseball than I explain this one to me.
The runner is always safe on fan interference? Is that really how it works?

As it happened, it appeared the ball just cleared the fence. The moron fan is seen jumping up and down holding the ball, hugging his mates, as if they just pulled off a heist at JFK airport.
On replay, with better camera angles, it was abundantly clear that the fan's interference did not hinder the outfielder from snagging that ball. Zero chance it would have been caught.
But, the fan did stretch arm across the top shelf of the fence into the air space above the field. Doubtful the trajectory of the ball would have cleared the fence, but small possibility that the ball could have landed on the tippy top of the fence and skipped into the stands for a home run. Dumb fook fan's interference ruined any such chance.
Umpire's ruling was fair.
...these days...to the best of their ability.
They are saying that it wouldn't have been an out but it's also not a home run? They're saying that without the fan interference it would have been a double?
outfielder was not going to get to it in time to secure it and it would bounce off wall.
Runner was going already so they gave him home...and they believed Volpe would most likely wind up at second.
(Think the determination as to the carom and where Volpe would most likely wind up is the most subjective piece.)
(Interfering fan was tossed for interfering...but they let them keep the ball.)
I loved that the guy had a full security detail escort him to the street.
A perfect end to another Boone-led disappointment.
Bring it all back next year Cashman.
