If you can’t understand why a teacher - or a school secretary, or a janitor - would be scared to go back to work (maybe they live with their elderly mom; maybe they have heart disease), then you are a bigger tool than I thought.

But don't you think that from a high level that school policy should be primarily focused around the good of the students? With only secondary concern for the teachers?
Except when those two interests are intertwined like here.
Everyone else who has gone back to work has done so with restrictions like masking and social distancing and enhanced hygiene. Don’t you think adults and children deserve the same protections in a school setting? Israel has already proven the risk here. But yeah, just wing it, nothing to worry about.

A very costly and onerous requirement.
I had signs put in all the restrooms on this floor to wash your hands for 20 seconds.
I was gonna put others in telling them to use soap and to wash after either number 1 or 2, but was told that would be over the top.
The problem is rather than trying to make it work, the response is either just send them back and read this Science Mag article, or its too dangerous to reopen. If we would have handled our earlier reopening better, we would be in a lot better place. But that involves telling too many base constituencies on both sides to just STFU.
It is a bit ironic that there's so much debate and controversy around masks.

School districts across the country need guidance about how to do it. And they are not getting it.
The evidence supports opening...but it is risky. The Israelis have found that their schools were the super-spreaders. And in some regions - Houston, for instance - it could be disastrous.
In New Orleans, schools have been told that they should not expect to be able to give COVID tests to students. Our testing centers are essentially overwhelmed.
We need to do this wisely...and we need experts to tell us what that means.

I want schools open as much as anyone.
And, FWIW, I think they will, broadly speaking. Today is day 4 of both kids being in camp/daycare and it is a complete game changer at home. My son's camp is at his school so perhaps this can be considered a dry run.
That said, the original post's facts have little to do with whether they open. The concern isn't that a bunch of kids will die. But it fits the annoying trend on both sides of the aisle in the past couple of months. I'm glad I'm so busy at work.
My kids have been in summer school programs since 6/1.

And I agree with you that the original post doesn't really have much to do with whether the schools will open - I think it will vary across states depending on party leadership, which is just insane to believe. I hate what has happened to this country.
I think the states are going to be all over the place regardless of their governors.
My SIL is in Lexington, MA and they have already announced that kids will alternate weeks at schools in the best case scenario, and instruction will be all virtual at worst.
Cuomo ok'd camps as of a couple of weeks ago. Absent a spike (and we are generally doing alright here), I am optimistic that he will let schools proceed although with continued precautions that they have now (e.g., parents can't enter the building at all, temp checks, etc.). He said early on that they understand that business can't get up to speed with schools not operating, which gives me some hope.
People need to chill out on both sides and find more hobbies or work more. A perusal of the front page of this site shows a bigger dumpster and a bigger fire than usual, which I didn't think was possible.
I guess we need your soothing words on here more to calm everyone down.
