There are almost 500,000 unfilled manufacturing jobs right now in the US. You don't have enough of a labor force to fill the current job vacancies but you want to add more? Roll up yer sleeves and grab a wrench!
Everybody wants to add more manufacturing jobs. Not for themselves, mind you. For others.
I know of several companies who were sending jobs to China, but tariffs have kept manufacturing lines running in the US.
As a country, we have been sending far too many people to college, and even subsidizing our universities to provide useless degrees. Our behavior has to change. Our worship of hobby degrees which cost $250k, but which have zero return on investment...needs to stop. Auto industry, semiconductor industry ... these jobs need to come back to the US. If there are that many positions to fill, then it is time to offer higher wages.
Just had a handyman/remodeler at the house this morning. Guy was in his 20s. He did a great job. Not too long ago, any person like that would have been 50 years old.
Skilled trade shortages, retirements and desire to work remotely by the younger generations are driving both.
I'm not sure the reshoring argument is about adding more manufacturing jobs. But it sells.
By the way, I've also seen Canadian jobs going to China.
But I am still not sure what most humans are going to do as AI and automation take over as they are doing rapidly at the moment.
