The potential huge upside of AI: LEISURE!

As a freshman at ND in 1965 I was assigned to read Josef Pieper's "Leisure: The Basis of Culture."

In this tiny treatise he posited that leisure is the foundation of culture, providing the mental and spiritual space necessary for contemplation, creativity, and the appreciation of truth and beauty. His argument was that leisure is not merely the absence of work but a state of mind and a condition of the soul that allows humans to perceive reality and engage with higher truths, including the divine. He emphasized that the Greeks and medieval Europeans recognized leisure as essential for cultivating wisdom, religion, and the arts, seeing it as the first foundation of any culture.

So... if AI allows the species to enjoy many quanta more time for leisure... we should be on our way to enlightenment.

Take advantage of the Leisure you already have and suggest some remedies for coming challenges...

Serious psychotherapy followed by a steady meditation practice. Then you can live with anything.

I get where you're coming from, but it doesn't solve society's problems.

I can confirm that the human unconscious is filled with terrors.. but maybe this leisure will present us with an opportunity to access and our demons.
