Level 1
This type of surveillance needs rigorous oversight and consequences for misuse, as evidenced by a
recent case in San Jose, CA...(see link)
I'm sure the intentions of the ND Administration are good...but its use carries responsibility.

Level 1
Mass surveillance isn't a good thing. And why is it necessary when crime in the USA is down?
(no message)Imposing corporate abuse, neglect and greed on deserving victims.-
Level 2
I see both sides, but the Notre Dame campus is a potential target.
Perhaps any university could be targeted by terrorists or a nut looking to make a statement via a mass shooting. Notre Dame has a heightened profile as both a prominent catholic university and being center stage for college football.
As in any privacy intrusion question, it comes down to reasonableness in striking a balance between protecting public/student safety vs protecting the privacy of the comings and goings of thousands of citizens.
I frankly know very little about the technology, and more importantly, the effectiveness and reliability of disseminated information captured by the cameras. [Are these cameras simply the suggestion of general counsel to provide cover???]
Not taking a side. But, it is worthy of a conversation.

Level 3
That makes it even worse. ND was/is one of the safest college campuses.

Level 3
Interesting that cameras pointing in, not out.

Level 1
Sad. They should have notified up front
It is their property...so I don't have the same objection I do to governments doing it.
Still, they should have posted and notified...

Level 2
As a courtesy I agree.
Those cameras can also be used to
identify defiant trespassers such as
unauthorized protesters with bad intentions.-
Level 3
Can be...but same, or similar, rationale(s) will be used to justify mass surveillance everywhere...
People used to understand and pay at least some attention to George Orwell's messages...back when we had a halfway decent education system...

Level 4
I wonder if schools allow 1984 to be taught in class anymore.
