I’ve been wearing Oris watches. I prefer a straight forward face chronometer with a date pointer - an automatic and nothing extra.

...like being able to switch on the stop-watch feature when working out...quick weather fcst...turn on my Apple laptop...get chosen notifications, etc.
Downside...battery life...doesn't always last a full day.

Used to wear a Cartier Roadster, which I loved, but like suits and Italian shoes, the need for such a thing is much more rare.
Telling time is no longer an important one.
Others include:
1) As personal decoration to complete an outfit
2) Old habit preference of a longtime watch wearer
3) Success signaling to others
4)Personal admiration of the mechanism.
I'd say #3 is by far and away the most common reason these days.
Geography plays a big role in this as well:
In Las Vegas, you are evaluated socially more by your watch than even your car.
In the Midwest, you're seen as a strutting peacock if you're flashing your Omega.
Personally, I have lost my wedding ring more than a couple of times because I have to take it off to scrub for surgery, and watches were never practical for the same reason.
But for those wearing a watch for reason #3, I would think it would be more effective to simply get an electronic tie clip that shouts out "I'm rich!" when you press it.
Mine matches my 18K ND ring.
It screams understated class rather than in your face wealth.
It’s an heirloom piece that my nephew will inherit. Hopefully he will pass it along to my great nephew.
The dress watch is worn to weddings, formal events, etc., so maybe 3-4 times a year. I wear the Garmin 99% of the time - training to track my performance stats/VO2 Max/etc., monitor my sleep and resting pulse, etc. And since it doubles as my alarm clock, it's just convenient to keep it on the majority of the time.
I'm sure you remember TNIrish from the boards back in the day - he was passionate about high-end watches.
watch repair shops have closed. In order to have it repaired it needs to be sent away and won’t be ready for a minimum of 3 months and it’s a hefty fee to have it done. It’s almost Cheaper to buy a new one.
