Noah Lim, a senior majoring in pre-professional studies and theology, said it was beautiful to see the Notre Dame community come out in strong numbers to participate in such an important occasion.
“Oftentimes it’s football on Saturday, but today we rallied to consecrate the university to the Sacred Heart,” said Lim. “What better thing to rejoice in?”
During his homily, Bishop Rhoades noted the appropriateness of consecrating a university like Notre Dame to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“As the Church was born from the heart of Jesus, the University of Notre Dame was born ‘from the heart of the Church’: ex corde ecclesiae,” said Bishop Rhoades, referring to the title of St. Pope John Paul II’s 1990 apostolic constitution on Catholic universities.
Bishop Rhoades added that at Notre Dame, love must direct the cultivation of knowledge, with classroom and research pursuits “linked and oriented to goodness.”
This message resonated with Margaret McGuinness, an aerospace engineering professor who participated in the consecration.
“Being a professor is my chance to pour my knowledge and love into students, to encourage them to be excellent in their profession and be an example to them of how to love God, too,” she said.
Álvaro Medina, a grduate student in biochemistry, added that the Sacred Heart devotion provides an important reminder to him in a field of study where there can be “this temptation to build our ‘Babel towers’” of technological innovation, instead of pursuing what is truly good for humanity.
“The fact of having a path back home and having your heart in the right place is actually very inspiring,” he said of the university consecration.
Attendees were also struck by the appropriateness of emphasizing God’s unquenchable love for the human person on an elite university campus where students can be tempted to root their self-worth in achievement.
“The Sacred Heart is the complete opposite of that. It says you are worthy of love just as you are,” said Lim, who added that the consecration has inspired him to carry forth Christ’s love in his capacity as a resident assistant in Dunne Hall.

Fortunately, the University of Notre Dame's Leadership has consistently promoted this 'Ethos' of Love...as exemplified in its Pastoral Letter exclaiming LOVE for all Students, Faculty and Staff...even those who are members of the GLBTQ community...i.e they are Loved, Accepted and Welcomed...'Just As They Are'...since they are Worthy of that Love.
