Good WP article on why voters are just sometimes....well....dumb

ABC News reports: “According to ABC News/Ipsos data, 70% of Americans disapprove of [President] Biden’s handling of gas prices, though even more respondents — 77% — support his proposal to ban Russian oil, even if it means paying more at the pump.” Umm. It’s hard to see how those two sentiments are consistent.

How do you explain this dichotomy?...an awful lot of people don't really THINK through such issues...in this case, those respondents are frustrated and angered by increased gas prices, yet at the same time are very sympathetic to the plight of Ukrainians...very reasonable opinions on their part...it's just that they are torn between the two...it's up to the "Leaders" to identify the true danger (e.g. unprovoked wars by autocrats vs. temporary increases in gas prices) and do what needs to be done.

Because they know that prices were already way up before Russia invaded.

You can have both opinions. You can believe that stopping the import of Russian oil is a good thing, and that you would pay more at the pump for it, while still believing that Biden could do better with the price of gas than what he has. Russia is not the only reason that gas prices have blown up, and it would take a rather dumb person to buy the bullshit that it is all because of the Russian invasion.

Thread Level: 5

Well that opinion you espouses is silly and irrational. Tell us what the US president should be

It's only silly or irrational if you believe that the only reason for the increase in price is because of Russia. The price of gas was going up well before Russia invaded. I can't have a real discussion with you unless you actually accept that fact.

Gas prices are going up everywhere, not just in the US, so this is likely bigger than just Biden, but that also does not necessarily excuse him from all guilt. We still have it cheap compared to the rest of the world. I don't usually complain about my first world problems.

Why would a right wing media outlet try to say that it is only because of Russia that gas prices are high? That would remove blame from Biden, unless you include the Biden fucking up and green lighting the Russian invasion? I guess that would work too?
