We are not learning from Germany and the EU and are almost hopelessly dependent on China for....

.....many things but the most important of which include crucial Drugs and Medical supplies and now, with the Taiwan Blockade, almost half of the semiconductor chips needed in a wide variety of our manufactured products including Autos, appliances, computers, phones, etc. If and when they take Taiwan, they will be in position to devastate our economy and we will be in the same fix that Europe is in as a result of the Russian Nat Gas supply reductions and be dependent on our Enemy.

Don't kid yourself - the Chinese are just as dependent upon their exports as we are upon their imports.

You're kidding yourself. China boasts the most comprehensive industrial system in the world.

Among top world's major industrial goods, China account for 40%.

Let me just give you one example, the trade between China and Africa as a whole is 4 times of trade of US-Africa.

The point of this thread is if the trades between us and china stop for some reason (war, sanction...), We suffer more than Chinese because we don't make anything. In this sense we depend on china more than they depend on us.

Their export-led growth model is dependent upon trade.

If that trade stops, so too does their growth - and the CCP will have some 'splainin to do.

A US-China conflict and resultant stop of trade would hurt the Chinese economy FAR more than it would hurt ours.

You depend on a 6-year's old report to judge today's situation? Let's put one number here to see

how much of China's dependency on US: trade to U.S. account for 12% GDP of China as of 2021. You still remain in 1990s.

International corporations built China's industrial base. The Chinese invent nothing.

So what? We have value, the value of democracy and greenbacks. Let's just keep exporting them.

I suppose they had a fiduciary duty to lower costs for the benefit of their shareholders but anyone could see that the ChiComs were fleecing us all long term.

We have been hoisted on our own petard.

Now they're doing Trump thing without Trump - passing Chips Act. It will likely fail

Because it is a minute late and a dollar short. I would support bill had they done it 10-15 years ago. Now it is too late. China already grasped 7nm technology. Most chip applications don't need 3nm or 7nm chips anyway. EV, washers, refrigerators, even Pelosi's 50k refrigerator don't need 7nm chips. But the side effect brought by this Chip Act, crony capitalism, will be huge.

Chip fab is extreme capital intensive investment. Building one plant costs 12billion. The money they passed is too less under semiconductor investment standard. (don't get me wrong it's still huge money). It tells us we are really poorer.
