On the bright side, these kids were protected even more from a virus that largely would have ignored them anyway.

yes, the kids had low risk, but not zero...and, as mentioned already, kids are phenomenal asymptomatic "Spreaders".

These were the early days of the pandemic...many changes were needed to allow schools to open...social distancing...improved ventilation...masking...all the things outlined in Baron's MIT paper that addressed risk reduction in school settings.

I you were a 50+ Grade School teacher in that time, place, environment, I doubt you'd be so sanguine about opening up.

Posts like this just serve to expose what a disaster our "Leader" at that time was...instead of sharing with the American public what he shared with Bob Woodward in Jan. 2020...i.e. COVID-19 was/is a highly contagious and DEADLY virus that requires everyone to do their part in stopping its spread, he did the opposite...no concern for the public...just himself...the Malignant Narcissist, bar none.

"....yes, the kids had low risk, but not zero..." It was statistically zero relative to cases. To pretend otherwise is as dishonest as most of what you say. The risk to kids was lower than about a billion other "risks" they would encounter in their normal school attendance annually.

"I you were a 50+ Grade School teacher in that time, place, environment, I doubt you'd be so sanguine about opening up." There were plenty of mitigations to easily cover this. Older instructors could have done so remotely to an attending class of kids in the room, if they wished not to teach in person. Keeping kids remote while unions held the kids/families hostage in attempt to extort unrelated benefits was unforgivable.

Shutting down for 2 weeks made sense. We were essentially all okay with the 15-days plan (which turned out to be a blatant lie to the American people). The argument for a month longer could be swallowed, as long as it was clear what necessary infrastructure needed to be put in place for the teachers who refused to come in or kids whose parents wanted them learning virtually.

But we had plenty of information that this would work just fine, and every idiot who supports the shutdowns that extended beyond the summer is an embarrassment.

most important part to this whole issue...."..and, as mentioned already, kids are PHENOMENAL ASYMPTOMATIC "SPREADERS"" (emphasis mine)...

The real world examples of kids bringing COVID into their households are everywhere...so, when all of this was going on and no vaccines were available until DECEMBER, much less being utilized, it is totally understandable why teachers would not want to risk their lives if alternatives - however less effective - were available.

Once the conditions you grudgingly acknowledge were put in place (ventilation, etc) and vaccines readily available (thank you, JB), those justifiably concerned teachers were able to return to the work they love.

Rand Paul is the least right wing Congressman in the GOP. He's a libertarian, for crying out loud. Freedom above all else.

But take out the "gain of function" lies by Fauci from the conversation. It is undisputed that the US was providing US tax dollars to the Wuhan lab. Totally insane.

The fact that anyone would defend that is disturbing to me.

types of virology research going on, not just in Wuhan, but in other global locations. Due to the critical need for insight and understanding of potential future deadly pathogens, the consensus opinion is that such very challenging efforts are necessary...but there is also agreement that "Gain of Function" experiments will not be utilized, and the U.S. funding of Wuhan adheres to that provision.

Rand Paul, an Ophthalmologist, does not understand what Dr. Fauci and other Infectious Disease experts are doing...he demonstrates this lack of knowledge by never allowing Dr. Fauci to explain to the public what the facts of GOF are...he's a waste of time and tax payer money.

Libertarians can't manage anything...that's why they are never elected as mayors or governors...they are fringe idealists who can't appreciate reality and make reasoned compromises, like mayors and governors ALWAYS have to do.

I had no problem with it, and no one else should have, either. There is an argument to be made that remaining closed until the summer was also a good idea - the warmer weather was going to limit spread significantly.

Summer programs should have been open for everyone. The results were excellent everywhere that these programs were available. And in the fall, schools should have been completely open for kids. There was ample time to prepare, and there were plenty of options with digital infrastructure to offer virtual access to the classroom instruction. And for any teacher who didn't feel comfortable doing in-person instruction, the same infrastructure could have supported them: They could have taught remotely to the kids in the classrooms.

There is no excuse for the schools led by teachers' unions to be held hostage while they made a list of unrelated demands.

The rich could work from home, and pay for in-person private schooling.

The poor had to go to work, while their kids stayed home and fell behind. So counterproductive, unless the goal is to keep the poor down so their votes are secure.
