Being in a juvenile probation camp were not his fault and he is misunderstood. We need to stop being so hard on him and let him go home. I’m sure he won’t get into anymore trouble. If he does, that won’t be his fault either.

Yes. The Double Jeopardy clause.
The teenager was adjudicated delinquent and sentenced as a juvenile. It does not appear he was prosecuted in adult court.
Most juvenile courts retain jurisdiction to age 21 at the most.
Fairly egregious facts. Doubtful the offender is released early. But, your pitch for a 20+ year sentence is not in play. Not in juvenile court.

"Juvenile" shouldn't apply to anyone over...let's go with 12.
I could be talked into doing away with juvenile court system altogether. It doesn't make sense. The court can take into account youth in sentencing. But this "under 21" thing is bogus. He can vote, but he can't make adult decisions? Yeah, that makes sense.

I've argued for the opposite. Brain doesn't fully develop until mid 20s.
Really probably shouldn't drink alcohol, do recreational drugs or own firearms before then. Voting? Military service? Not sure. Should definitely be a factor in sentencing though.

Tie the voting age to the age of adult responsibility, and I'm interested.
But, let's face it. If you don't know you shouldn't kill people by age 12, there is a good chance you will never learn that. Even if you do, that is still an adult act, and should carry adult consequences.
I come back to this: I just don't see a need for a juvenile judicial system. Judges can take age into account when sentencing.

I think you're oversimplifying. Lots of reasons a 12 year old might justify killing that they wouldn't at 25.

Juvenile courts are for ages < age 18.
But, in most states, the juvenile courts maintain jurisdiction over the sentence until age 21.
Jurisdictions also permit a juvenile to be be prosecuted as an adult for the most serious level crimes, and/or for 16+ year olds if certain factors are met.
The US Supreme Court has consistently recognized the difference between juvenile and adult culpability.
