I remember the NBA gave Pistol Pete a hard time because he was the best ball handler of them all
and they were jealous because he was white. Finally in the 90's guys like Isiah Thomas called him the best and he was appreciated more. They initially doubted Bird too, and McHale. Walton was more accepted because he was a hard core liberal, rebel and he talked about it. I never saw a guy with the skills of Maravich and I will absolutely remember the game he scored I believe 63 against the Knicks and fouled out with about 5 minutes left and with no three point shot adding to his tally. There were other stories anecdotely about Dave Cowens and Billy Cunningham having more fouls called against them than usual because the referees couldn't believe how athletic and how high they could jump.
