Couple reasons. Believe present generation is more fickle with their loyalties. Couple that with a
...team that has not been all that competitive against reasonable competition...and you get what we have seen.
Believe if they demonstrate a certain level of team competence...the student fans and fans in general will come...
Shrewsberry stupidly called out the fans last year. They have not forgotten.
After last year's loss to Louisville, his epic temper tantrum rant included him emphasizing that many fans have given up on the team and the coaching staff, urging them not to return when the team improves.
