Mine may be a minority viewpoint - no pun intended, but I believe it is an institutional problem
They just simply cannot recruit skilled and athletic players, no matter who is the head coach. Not McLeod, not Brey, and not MS. Neither could Digger in his last few years.
Something in the institution is undercutting ND basketball. Probably partly Admissions, partly scouting, and certainly NIL. ND Administration and Board of Trustees don’t see much money in it, and don’t believe that lack of success affects donations - unlike football. And someone up the chain is dead set against the Portal in Basketball. They don’t even make an effort.
I appreciate the contribution from Towt, but to bring in only one Portal transfer for this season was malfeasance. And the guy from Madonna College does not count. MS has nothing to work with except a bunch of guards who lack quickness and can’t play defense. I think anyone they could have hired would have fared the same.
ND doesn’t want to do the one-and-dones like Duke does.
It’s funny, but does anybody think Duke is less of an academic powerhouse because they do so?
