Hard to believe Kelly let it get to this point...
All ND has to do is play like a B+ team and 98% of recruits will drink the kool aid about the program. Heck, a B rating would be enough. Is that too much to ask of our coaches, with all the advantages they have built in for recruiting? Why the roller coaster, regular reset?
Kelly has no one to blame but himself.
Watching Clemson/Alabama was a sobering reminder of just how far away we are and have really been for a long, long time.
Its inexcusable.

We were very close to Clemson...15 months ago...
Kelly's schedule was so relatively easy that he literally quit on this past season to get to 4-8.
Pretty obvious 2016 was the worst coaching job of his career
It isn't clear to me why, or whether he can ever recover.
He got complacent....rubbed off on his team and some of his staff
After a 10-3 season when ND lost its last 2 games, he acted like ND just won the NC. I mean why fire BVG after going 10-3 (despite 1 loss entirely on his shoulders)?
Other than a few guys (Onwualu, Morgan, Jarron Jones) nobody got better in the offseason. Afterall they were 10-3 and great!
By the time Kelly figured out there was a problem (Duke), it was too late.
That's my take.
Kelly now seems to be doing a full 180...as the staff shakeup demonstrates. As far as whether or not he can recover? I hope so, but doubt it. With the staff overhaul ND is probably a year a way from actual playoff contention. I see 8-4 next year, which was good enough before the 4-8 season, but not after it.
I am in the same boat...but I guess we're gonna get to find out...
