On top of learning a completely new position.
He'd actually have less of a depth problem at safety if he wanted to sit another year.
And it's not as if playing lb is anything like playing safety.
Also, the mental game as a linebacker is significantly different from that of a defensive back's.
Derrik Allen wants to play safety, and if he wants to transfer because he's not likely to get much playing time next year (outside of what would have been mopup duty), then I support his choice to do so. I suspect that Kyle Hamilton has already passed him on the depth chart.
In honor of 8/8...
Elliot and Gilman are starting. Brown is in front of him. Hamilton is better than he is; and Crawford is all the way back. Now he is competing with an incoming freshman - Ajavon
He wasn't going to play. Wish him the best of luck.

"The writing was on the wall for Allen, who was at best the fifth safety on the depth chart and not in competition for a role on special teams, at least through the first five practices."
Sounds like he didn't want to wait for true opportunity, but it really could be anything.
mostly rhetorical but it is puzzling.
