Derrick Allen - Depth - I wish the kid all the luck in the world ...but...

I wish the kid all the luck in the world. But when things like this start to happen - a 4 star highly rated kid transferring out. It shows the Irish.... maybe have turned the corner on a huge issue - Depth. The kid saw the writing on the wall, even though he's really good - he wasn't going to play because the talent is too deep / good in front of him.

Not saying this for a fact - but looking across the roster - it sure looks like depth might finally be "not a problem". Not quite a "strength yet" - but not a problem. Allen saw the same thing.

Depth? We’re paper thin at Safety. I don’t think that logic applies here.

what this means that Allen didn't play to his 4 star rating.

On the surface, it seems like a short term decision. Eric Hansen on the Pod of Gold

podcast (recorded before this news came out today) said that he was perhaps a little too heavy to play safety in ND’s current system.

Also that Kelly had told him in the spring that he wasn’t quite ready for the field, but thought he was developing towards that.

Might just be impatience, or a lack of fit with this scheme.

Frosh Hamilton + 5th yr Crawford repping at safety for depth likely spooked him wrt PT.

Seems like there was opportunity next season.

Have to wonder if it was more than just a PT issue. Wish him well regardless.

But with Griffith back at his natural safety position next yr with Hamilton,he isn’t likely to start

Is Griffith moving to safety next year?

Griffith was touted as a physical corner when recruited, with the ability to also play safety. I don’t think safety was considered his “natural” position. If he continues to play CB this season, him moving to S for 2020 seems like a big “if.” And even “if” it happens, there isn’t much depth (and basically no experienced depth) at safety in 2020.
