Very small class though. Impacts ranking significantly.

We took two graduate transfers, and we're still one man over the 85 scholarship limit.

When all sources of information, at your disposal; were either your latest, and or your next edition's of Blue and Gold Illustrated; unless you wanted to spend 50 bucks calling Tom Lemming every 2 hours lol. Speaking of Tom Lemming, he was ND's go to guy for all the information on potential Irish recruits; USA Today was your national source of information. Many top recruits would wake up that morning still undecided. The day was like Christmas for ND fans; and in most cases, ND would find that hidden package behind the desk or end table. I remember, not getting the full run down or list of commitments until my next edition arrived in the mail in late February; Names like:Tom Lemming, Lou Holtz, and Vinny Cerrato will always resonate with me when it comes to past ND signing days!.

I like the early signing date, so far it has served us better, IMO.

I'd say the disappointment outweighed the victories back then. It was definitely exciting, though.

Bob Davie screwed the pooch when he bent over backwards to accommodate that diva's (Leak's) demands.

CJ Leak insisted that we recruit no other quarterbacks that year, and that we not recruit any more quarterbacks for two more years, in addition to promising him the starting job. While Davie did agree to the first two demands, he still told Leak that he had to earn the job, which seemed to placate Leak for the time being.

In the end, Jim Caldwell upped the ante and promised Leak that he would start as a freshman at Wake Forest, in addition to the other demands, but Leak could never beat out a very mediocre Ben Sankey in 1999, or a terrible James MacPherson in 2000. Still, this kind of snake oil sales pitches, along with someone being a diva, ended up putting us in a pretty bad quarterbacking situation in 1999, and arguably, in 2000. I guess one could say that Jim Caldwell perfected the art of Urban Meyering before Urban Meyer made it his mode of operation...

Yes, Matt Lovecchio did a nice job of running things, but the playbook was severely cut down in order to accommodate a true freshman, and in all honesty, with an experienced QB leading the team in 2000, we should have gone undefeated through the regular season with all of that NFL talent on that team.
